The Beginning of a Legacy Friday 30 December, 2011

In 1968, BMW released a car, that would become and icon, and lead to generations of tuners and racers.
Launched as a two door version of the existing 2000, the 2002 firmly secured BMW’s position in the small car market and served as a forerunner to todays 3 series, including the almighty e30 M3 and its more recent variants. Long before there was the 414 hp, V8 powered sports coupe, however, there was the 2002.
This particular 2002 was rescued by Chris Roth of CR’s Motor Co. just outside of Carlisle, PA. Walking through Chris’s shop is taking a trip through the BMW family tree, from the classic CS to modern X5′s, Chris can handle it all and has the part collection to impress. Every corner is a treasure chest of vintage, OEM and performance BMW parts waiting for the next project to come along.
Starting off as a somewhat rusted and aging 1973 2002, Chris went through the process of meticulously repairing the fatigued metal as well as the holes left behind by the original chrome trim. Going for a motorsports inspired theme, the body was smoothed and stripped of any unnecessary moulding, and OEM flares were added. Keeping OEM, Chris resprayed the vintage racer in the classic BMW orange that was oh-so-famous in the 70′s when the 2002 first made its mark.
Given new life, this classic racer has since been sold and is now living life in the southeast, but rumor has it there is a rather solid 2002 waiting in line for Chris’ next build. This one will feature some modern horsepower in the form of a healthy turbo 6 cyl. If the build quality is anything like this past build, it will be bound to impress, and we’ll be there to cover it.
